G4TV goes telethon for Extra Life today!

As a promotional partner and sponsor of Extra Life for these last fewyears, G4 needed to figure out a new way to rally our audience. We have a big footprint in the games social space, so we can attract team members, but raising a team is only half the battle. That team also needs to contribute. To help raise money, I devised an Extra Life telethon-style event to be live streamed at G4TV.com starting this Friday, October 19th at 12pm Pacific, where the audience can donate for fantastic swag and collectibles given by the world's top video game publishers. We'll be playing all sorts of games with and for our audience, and taking recommendations from them all along the way. At the end, G4 will also match every dollar donated (up to $5,000) for the event itself, which will hopefully be a great incentive for people to contribute.
Beyond that, I reached out to the many game publishers and developers we work with all year long, asking them for anything they could offer to help make people take notice. Using this arsenal, we've created a tiered reward plan to help encourage members into reaching out to their friends and family for donations. People who raise the most money as well as people that raise any money at all are eligible, as are the people donating to Extra Life. It's not perfect, and there's a lot learned for the next time out, but hopefully it will make a difference turning the zeroes into heroes!
Gamers are a passionate lot, and in my experience, extraordinarily giving. I've had complete strangers donate to me personally, which has forged many friendships (Xbox Live and otherwise!). I absolutely love what Extra Life stands for, and hope that if you're reading this, you'll consider a donation for the charity today. And please stay tuned toG4TV.com on Friday at 12pm Pacific to see what we have in store.
